Claim: A video has been shared on social media with the claim that it shows Priyanka Gandhi in a state of inebriation.
Source: Facebook and Twitter.
What Happened: A video has been circulated on Facebook with the claim that it shows the Congress party’s newly appointed general secretary for Uttar Pradesh East, Priyanka Gandhi, in an intoxicated state. The video shows a visibly agitated Priyanka Gandhi saying in Hindi ‘Just think of what you are doing, please go quietly and those who want to push and shove they can go ahead.’
The video has been shared with the following caption:
This translates to: ‘Congress may have hope from someone who gets drunk as soon as it becomes the evening, but the country does not. She will be a bigger Pappu than Pappu himself. Brother and sister will perform the last rites of Congress together.’
This video has been shared by multiple people on both Facebook and Twitter. Some of the posts have received thousands of shares and reposts. Many people have believed this narrative, and have condemned or ridiculed such behavior.
Facts: This video does not, in fact, show Priyanka Gandhi in an intoxicated state, and the narrative attached to it is false. The video is in fact from April 2018, and was shot during a candlelight march protesting the Kathua and Unnao rape cases. According to different media reports, Gandhi grew angry with the crowd for pushing and unruly behavior. As a result, she asked them to march silently. None of the reports mention her being inebriated in any way. She had forcefully urged the unruly crowd to go home if they wanted to push and shove.
This same video was shared by ANI with the caption: ‘WATCH: Priyanka Gandhi gets angry at the candlelight march, says ‘Nobody will push each other. You should know the reason for which you are here. If you cannot behave go home. Now, all of you will silently walk till there.’
Conclusion: An old video was shared with a false narrative to spread propaganda and demean Priyanka Gandhi, who has just made her formal entry into Indian politics. This is very similar to how fake news and false information are circulated about her brother, Rahul Gandhi, in order to portray him as an incompetent politician. Social media users are advised to cross-check such videos that target a politician personally, as more often than not it is disinformation aimed at character assassination.
