What Happened: A series of posts have been shared recently on social media claiming that the well-known Telugu actor MS Narayana has died.
The narrative has been shared on Facebook by multiple users and pages. Most users expressed shock and sadness at the actor’s demise.
The posts have raked up a substantial number of shares and comments. The numbers are expected to go up, as this narrative has just started circulating, and MS Narayana had a subtaintial fan following. It is only expected most of them would further the narrative without verifying the facts.
Facts: The popular Telugu actor M.S Narayana actually passed away on the 23rd of January, 2015, due to multiple organ failure. This fact was repeatedly pointed out by social media users in the comments section of these posts, but it failed to arrest the spread of this new clickbait narrative.
Conclusion: False news of celebrities dying is not uncommon on social media, because the emotional nature of these narratives drive up the number of shares. A similar death hoax about Mr Bean (Rowan Atkinson) recently went viral on social media. Many Hollywood celebrities, like Morgan Freeman, Adam Sandler, Sylvester Stallone, and Johnny Depp have also been victims of social media death hoaxes.
