What happened:

The picture shared by The ‘CM of Karnataka’ Twitter handle regarding the opening of the new solar park was an exercise in simple propaganda, touting the government’s achievements in an election year. Quite a few major news outlets covered the story about the new Solar Park being the largest in the world, including Livemint, Business Standard, and the Financial Express

.

Fact:

The picture in the Tweet extolling the Karnataka government’s achievement in inaugurating this park was in fact of the Pocking Solar Park situated in Bavaria, Germany, which is currently the world’s largest solar park. The picture’s metadata shows that it was taken with a Panasonic DMC-FZ30 camera on the 8th of June, 2006.The tweet made by CMofKarnataka, was subsequently deleted.

This photo has also been used on several websites as a stock photo of photovoltaic power stations.

From his own account, the Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah tweeted a few actual photos from the inauguration on the 4th of March, 2017..

Conclusion:

The Solar Plant in Karnataka is unquestionably one of the biggest projects that has been taken up by the Karnataka Government. However, the CM’s PR team made an easily avoidable mistake by including a stock picture obtained by a basic internet search, instead of using a picture of the actual site in question, which would have been fairly simple to obtain.
