A photograph showing an elephant carrying a lion cub in its trunk while a lioness walks beside it has been shared on social media. The post claimed that the act of apparent kindness was to save the cub from the heat of the Savannah.
A picture of a lioness and elephant walking side by side with the elephant carrying a lion cub in its trunk has been shared on Facebook recently with the description:
‘It was considered the best photo of this century. A lioness and her cub were crossing the savannah but the heat was excessive and the puppy was in great difficulty walking. An elephant realized that his cub would die and carried him in his trunk to a pool of water walking beside his mother. And we call them wild animals.’
However, this is not the first time this particular picture has been shared on Facebook. It has been shared repeatedly since April 2018, and some of the posts have received over thousands of shares, comments, and reactions.
This viral image of an elephant carrying a lion cub is not real and was initially shared as an April Fool’s prank. The image was first created by Kruger National Park and shared by their official Twitter account, Kruger Sightings.
The image was shared on the 1st April, and the description of the image ended with the words ‘Tinged by Sloof Lipra’ (April Fools in reverse).
The photoshopped image, when shared for the first time, had reached an estimated 20 million people and was repeatedly debunked. Business Insider and The New Indian Express had published articles clarifying how the image was fake and how animals don’t behave like this in the wild.
